With a deep understanding of the evolving needs of aged care, Maria Ciancarelli, Project Director in our Victorian office, has been leading the delivery of residential aged care projects across the state.

Maria is currently working on Public Sector Residential Aged Care Developments (PSRAC) for the Victorian Health Building Authority (VHBA) across regional Victoria – Cohuna and Rutherglen, as well as Private Sector Opal Care Communities in Brighton, East Bentleigh and Croydon.  A little further north and on the Victorian border, Princes Court Limited is also about to commence construction of a new RACD, which Maria has led from the initial Master Planning Phase.

As we look to the next wave of aged care facilities which is energised by the New Aged Act commencing 1 November 2025, Maria shares some of the key drivers shaping the future of these essential spaces:

🧠 Designing for dementia is now a baseline, not a bonus. Purpose-built dementia-friendly design is essential, especially in regional areas where demand continues to grow.  These environments must be intuitive, safe and uplifting for both residents and their families.

🏘️ Aged care partnered with community.  There’s a shift toward more open, connected and inclusive facilities that reflect and integrate with the local community.

🔄 Flexibility is key to futureproofing. From adaptable floorplans to shared multi-use spaces, new facilities are being designed to evolve alongside changing models of care and resident preferences.

🤝 Wellness centres bringing health and community together. Integrated allied health services and community spaces are helping to deliver more holistic care, all in one place which benefits the residents and the broader community.

Maria’s insight and leadership continue to play a vital role in helping our clients navigate and deliver aged care environments that truly support quality of life.
