Delivering a custom designed, state of the art Research and Teaching Facility to bring together a diverse range of nine science disciplines under one building which encourages collaboration and interaction of the researchers, teachers, and students.

Background

Massey University delivered a world class research and teaching facility to allow collocation of multiple science cohorts including food, health, marine and physical science within a new 10,200m2 building.

The building accommodated animal quarantine facilities (insects and spiders) along with PC1 and PC2 Laboratories.

Johnstaff's role

Johnstaff provided project management resources imbedded within the Massey University project delivery team for the construction phase of the project.

Johnstaff worked closely with the contractor, client, and project stakeholders to ensure the complexities of the research and laboratory spaces were delivered to a high standard and met all certification requirements.

Addressing the issues

The project was delivered on time and on budget through a period disrupted by COVID-19 restrictions, material shortages and long lead times and workforce challenges.

The client, contractor and project team worked collaboratively to mitigate these project challenges where possible which was assisted by the Early Contractor Involvement procurement where the façade and Building services were delivered as a Design and Construct package.

Outcomes

Project delivered on time with delays associated with the pandemic mitigated
Extensive stakeholder engagement for nine separate science departments
Project delivered within budget despite COVID-19 impacts
PC1 and PC2 laboratories successfully received all required certifications in line with the commissioning programme
