Reinvigoration of the existing Bradshaw Chapel with the addition of a dedicated music annexe, enhancing the Chapel as one of the school’s most prominent, and functional buildings. An adjacent new Langford Pavilion acts as a further educational, functional and spectator offering, allowing for the showcasing of school sporting events on the Rendall Oval.

Background

Haileybury determined that the addition of a dedicated music annex and Chapel refreshment would revitalise this area of the school. In addition, a new sports pavilion will provide further usable area and help promote the school community through improved access to sporting events. The new Chapel Annexe provides a dedicated music facility, undercover connection to the chapel, instrument room, offices and storage area.

Johnstaff's role

Johnstaff was engaged to provide Project Management services for all phases of the redevelopment. Our initial services included assessing the Architect’s design proposals, which were submitted via a design competition process. Johnstaff then helped finalise and define the project scope, managed consultant engagement and developed a master programme. These project initiation activities identified key site constraints and opportunities to be further developed in the subsequent design and construction phases.

Addressing the issues

This project was coordinated with another project on the campus managed by Johnstaff, adding to the complexity of managing operational impacts to the school. The achievement of key dates is critical, with any changes having significant flow on affects. Johnstaff lead the design team and managing the various site investigations and liaising with authorities. The design and construction of this project forms a link, both aesthetically and operationally to the existing Chapel. The new Chapel Annexe and Pavilion must both pay homage to the current Bradshaw Chapel, while also having an identity of their own.  The balcony provides unencumbered views of the Rendall Oval.

Outcomes

Innovative use of space to maximise utilisation with the pavilion providing catering kitchen with function/multi-purpose spaces which double as classrooms.
Management of Planning Permit application process
Innovative design sessions and informative client correspondence to extract a clear brief and scope of works
Successful stakeholder management, including consultants, planning and user groups and external authorities
