Haileybury completed a Middle School review that highlighted a strong need to develop flexible spaces that supported innovation in learning within class groups and across year levels. The school developed a strategy to build a new Senior School / Year 9 building with flexible teaching and learning options.
The new facility provides a three-level dedicated Year 9 facility with multi-function spaces on the ground floor that can be used as presentation, examination or project spaces. A Learning Café will provide students with an internal collaboration space that can be used at lunchtime and for small group teaching.
Fold up doors along the northern façade provide access from the multi-function and Learning Café spaces into the courtyard. This will give the Year 9cohort the ability to grow into the senior school environment.
Johnstaff was engaged to provide Project Management services for the design and construction phases of the new Year 9 building. Johnstaff’s initial services included establishing the project scope, managing the consultant engagement and developing a master programme.
These initiation activities identified key site constraints and opportunities to be further developed in the schematic design phase and beyond.
The site posed several challenges, including town planning and services constraints, given its position on an established, operational school.
Johnstaff worked closely with the design team to manage site investigations and liaised with specialists to address site constraints.
The site is located within a leafy residential area. Johnstaff has worked closely with the town planning consultant and the school for a successful streamlined town planning approach.
