Investing in the future and maintaining Deakin University’s leadership position in the exercise sciences as Australia’s #1 sport sciences school.

Background

The Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science is a flagship program for Deakin University and was the first to gain accreditation with Exercise and Sport Science Australia (ESSA) in Victoria.

For some time, issues associated with the facilities and teaching spaces had been eroding the successful position of this course in the market.

This project was designed to address those facility issues.

Johnstaff's role

Deakin University engaged Johnstaff primarily to provide Contract Administration services. We also provided supplementary Project Management support to the University’s internal project team. Johnstaff was key in leading and implementing the strategic management framework for the project.

Addressing the issues

The design brought several areas of the school into one location on a constrained, but highly prominent site at the University’s Burwood campus. The site abuts a main arterial highway.

The key issues addressed in this high-performance sports facility included:

  • coordination of a third-party climate chamber, procured directly by the University, into the builder’s programme
  • the safe transition of floor finishes, particularly between the five40 metre indoor running lanes that were fitted with force plates
  • the design and on-site coordination of four motorised camera grids to record the motion of balls and bodies, as well as specialised 10 metre ceilings with retractable catch-netting to accommodate high-ball learning, and
  • careful management of a staged handover of the new teachingfacilities to allow classes to progress seamlessly from existing buildings.

Outcomes

Facilitated the negotiation of complex contractual claims between the Principal and Contractor
Implemented a Lump Sum Contract with a Guaranteed Bill of Quantities, providing the client cost assurance at contract award
Assessed preparedness for tender, including identifying value engineering options
