Creating a vibrant and inspiring learning environment with a focus on creative and innovative arts and technology for Luther College.

Background

Luther College sought to provide opportunities to support contemporary learning approaches which further enhances collaborative and co-created learning outcomes between students and teachers. The school developed a design brief to build a new arts and technology learning centre to facilitate this process.

The facility will provide a two-level dedicated arts and technology education space focusing on food technology, visual arts and design & digital technology. Gallery spaces are included to enable the building to become a vibrant and inspiring environment which showcases student achievements to be experienced by the wider school community. The CCI also acts as a landmark building on the south-east corner of the campus which promotes high levels of engagement with the existing campus.

Johnstaff's role

Johnstaff was engaged to provide Project Management services for the design and construction phases of the new building. Our services included establishing the project scope, managing the consultant engagement, developing a master programme and managing the decanting and relocation needs of the college. These initiation activities identified key site constraints and opportunities to be further developed in the schematic design phase and beyond.

Addressing the issues

The combination of arts and technology disciplines into the CCI from the existing buildings on site required extensive staging and relocation in a live school environment. Johnstaff worked closely with the college staff to understand timetabling and teaching requirements to ensure that all affected learning spaces are relocated and decanted effectively whilst maintaining functionality. Johnstaff navigated the town planning process for the CCI in conjunction with providing optimum outcomes for the college’s heritage buildings. A Conservation Management Plan was prepared to inform the college, Council and DTP of future developments on campus.
