PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Laboratory Experience

Johnstaff Projects provides Project and Construction Management services to a range of laboratory projects across Australia.  Previous experience has included laboratories for CSL, The Victorian Infectious Diseases Laboratory, WHO (World Health Organisation) Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza, Burnett Institute at the Alfred Hospital, and the St Vincent’s Animal House Laboratory. These projects range from specialised clean room to PC4 level containment facilities.  Our unique services include but are not limited to high level Project Directorship, Construction Management, and Project Management.

CSL – Biopharmaceutical Formulation Centre
Johnstaff Projects has provided specialist onsite Project Management and Construction Management services for several projects at CSL’s research and development facility in Parkville.

We first delivered the construction of a greatly improved Sterile Testing Laboratory worth $2 million, involving complex staging, procurement of specialist equipment and letting and management of trades.

Our initial success with CSL was rewarded through our subsequent appointment to construct a new $6 million Biopharmaceutical Formulation Centre which will act as CSL’s main Research & Development facility.

Completed in early 2008, the Biopharmaceutical Formulation Centre at CSL’s manufacturing site in Parkville, Melbourne provides a specialised service to industry and academia for formulation and finishing of liquid pharmaceuticals to be used in human clinical studies.  It will also provide a unique setting for training of students enrolled in Good Manufacturing Practice courses delivered by Swinburne University of Technology.

Each of the above projects has been delivered on time and under budget.

Biosciences Research Centre
Johnstaff Projects was engaged as Project Managers for the Master Planning and Schematic Design of the project such that output specification for a Partnerships Victoria procurement could be initiated.

This unique project involved the planning and documentation of 1200m2 of Physical Containment PC4 and PC3 laboratory space along with 10,000 m2 of PC2 and laboratory space.  In addition, the facility will include post mortem, controlled environment space, PC2 glasshouse, digester waste treatment, biotron and a 900Mhz NMR.

When constructed, the facility will be one of only three of its type in the world; combining strategic plant and animal research within the same facility.

Victoria Infectious Diseases Research Laboratory
Johnstaff Projects are providing Project Management and Construction Management services for delivery of new biocontainment facilities, including new PC3, PC2 laboratories and upgrade to existing PC4 laboratory.

The project also includes new offices for the VIDRL (Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory) and WHO (World Health Organisation) Flu Centre.
This high tech project has been consistently delivered on time and on budget in the most unusual and difficult construction circumstances.

Royal Children’s Hospital & Murdoch Childrens Research Institute Biotech Labs
MCRI supporting a team of more than 500 researchers, including 60 postgraduate students, has created an international reputation for the Institute.  MCRI is an independent, non-profit organisation supported by Government, corporate and private donors. MCRI is affiliated to the University of Melbourne and based at the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne.

Johnstaff Projects was engaged as Project Manager and Construction Manager for various stages of the Redevelopment of the Royal Children’s Hospital and the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute housed within the Hospital.  We managed the construction of a ten-storey building with complex biotechnology and lab fit out.

In particular, our organisation managed the design and validation requirements to meet Good Manufacturing Practices and requirements of the Australian and European regulators for this cell therapeutics, cord blood and stem cell facility.

Management of TGA, OGTR and FDA compliance validation was an essential component of this project.  Part of the facility also contained a drug trials unit, which required the implementation of the highest level of security and result quality validation systems such that the facility complied with FDA requirements.
